How to Care for Pure Wool Knitwear

Pure wool requires gentler care than everyday fabrics, but looking after it is relatively simple. Following these steps will help your knitwear retain its shape, softness and beauty.

Hand-washing is the safest option for pure wool, as excessive heat and agitation can cause shrinkage, felting and pilling.

1. Turn the garment inside out before washing. If friction causes any pilling, it is then more likely to occur on the inside.

2. Fill a clean bowl or sink with tepid water. Avoid hot water, as sudden changes in temperature can cause wool fibres to shrink.

3. Add a small amount of specialist liquid wool wash or gentle liquid soap. Never use ordinary laundry powder, biological detergent or washing pods.

4. Submerge the garment and allow it to soak for approximately five minutes. Handle it gently and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the fabric.

5. Drain the water and rinse carefully in clean, tepid water if required by your chosen wool wash.

6. Gently press out the excess water without twisting or wringing the garment.

Drying Your Knitwear

1. Reshape: Lay the damp garment flat on a clean towel and carefully ease it back into shape.

2. Remove excess water: Roll the garment and towel together like a Swiss roll, pressing gently to absorb moisture without stretching the knit.

3. Air-dry: Unroll and place flat on a fresh, dry towel away from direct heat and sunlight. Never hang wet knitwear.

4. De-crease: Lightly steam dry wool without touching the iron directly to the fabric, or let creases naturally fall out during wear.

What About Pilling?

A small amount of pilling is natural, particularly during the first few wears or washes. It occurs when loose surface fibres rub together and does not mean that the garment is poor quality.

Any small pills can be gently removed by hand or with a sweater comb. As the loose fibres are removed, pilling should lessen with subsequent wear and washing.
